Samsung Washer Error Code 5E — Drainage Problem
What this means
The 5E error code means your Samsung washer is unable to drain water properly. This is commonly caused by a clogged drain filter, kinked drain hose, or blockage in the drain pump. Standing water remaining in the drum after a cycle is the telltale sign.
Alternate codes: 5C, SE
Step-by-step fix
3 stepsClean the debris filter
Open the small access panel on the front lower-right of the washer. Place towels and a shallow pan underneath. Slowly unscrew the drain filter cap and let water drain into the pan. Remove the filter and clear any lint, coins, hair ties, or debris.
This filter should be cleaned monthly. Coins and small objects are the most common culprits.
Check the drain hose
Pull the washer out and inspect the drain hose running from the back of the machine to your wall drain or standpipe. Check for kinks, clogs, or the hose being pushed too far into the standpipe (should be inserted 6–8 inches max).
If the drain hose is pushed in too far, it can create a siphon effect that prevents proper draining.
Test the drain pump
With the filter area open, run a spin/drain cycle and listen for the drain pump. If you hear humming but no water flow, the pump may be jammed. If there's no sound at all, the pump motor may be faulty.
Sometimes a small object (like a sock) gets past the filter and jams the pump impeller.
When to call a professional
If the drain pump is making grinding noises or not running at all, it likely needs replacement. Accessing the drain pump requires tilting or partially disassembling the machine.
