E-54

Samsung Oven/Range Error Code E-54 — Oven Temperature Sensor Short Circuit

Moderate Fix 30–60 minutes Tools: Multimeter, Phillips screwdriver, 1/4-inch nut driver

What this means

The E-54 error code indicates the temperature sensor in your Samsung oven has a short circuit — its resistance is far below the normal range. This is the opposite of an open circuit: instead of infinite resistance, the sensor reads near 0 ohms. The control board interprets this as an extremely high temperature and shuts off heating. A damaged sensor probe, water intrusion, or pinched wiring are the most common causes.

Alternate codes: E54

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Power cycle the oven

Turn off the breaker for two minutes. Restore power and attempt a bake cycle. If the oven heats normally, condensation or a one-time glitch may have caused the short.

Condensation inside the oven cavity after cooking something very moist (like a turkey) can temporarily short the sensor.

2

Measure sensor resistance

Turn off the breaker. Access the temperature sensor harness at the back of the range. Disconnect it and measure resistance across the two sensor leads. At room temperature, expect 1,080–1,100 ohms. A reading near 0 ohms confirms a short circuit.

If the reading is normal at the sensor but near 0 at the board connector, the wiring harness is shorted somewhere along its run.

3

Inspect wiring for damage

Trace the sensor wires from the probe at the rear oven wall to the control board. Look for spots where insulation has melted, wires are pinched against metal, or bare copper is exposed and touching the chassis.

The area where wires pass through the rear oven wall is a hotspot for insulation breakdown — check it closely.

4

Replace the sensor

If the sensor itself measures near 0 ohms, remove the mounting screw(s), pull the probe out, disconnect the harness, and install a new sensor. Restore power and run a bake test to verify E-54 clears and the oven reaches the correct temperature.

After installing the new sensor, preheat to 350 °F and verify accuracy with an oven thermometer.

When to call a professional

If both the sensor and wiring test good but E-54 persists, the control board's sensor input circuit may have an internal short. A technician should diagnose and replace the board.
