HC

Samsung Dryer Error Code HC — High Temperature (Heating Circuit) Error

Advanced Fix 30–60 minutes Tools: Multimeter, Phillips screwdriver, 1/4-inch nut driver, Vent cleaning brush

What this means

The HC error code indicates the dryer's internal temperature has exceeded safe operating limits. This is typically caused by a restricted vent system, a stuck relay on the control board keeping the heater on, or a failed thermostat not cutting off heat. This is a safety-critical error that should be addressed promptly.

Alternate codes: HC4, hC

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Allow the dryer to cool down

Unplug the dryer immediately and let it cool for at least 30 minutes before performing any inspection.

Do not run the dryer again until the cause is identified — overheating is a fire hazard.

2

Clean the entire vent system

Disconnect the exhaust hose and clean it thoroughly. Also clean the lint filter, the lint filter housing cavity (use a vacuum), and the external vent hood. A restricted vent is the number one cause of dryer overheating.

Use a flashlight to check inside the lint filter cavity — lint can accumulate deep inside.

3

Test the cycling thermostat and high-limit thermostat

The cycling thermostat regulates the heating element on and off during normal operation. The high-limit thermostat is a safety cutoff. Test both for continuity with a multimeter. Replace any that show no continuity.

If the high-limit thermostat is blown, it means the dryer overheated — find and fix the root cause.

4

Check the heating element for grounding

Test from each heating element terminal to the element housing with a multimeter set to continuity. Any reading means the element is grounded (touching the housing) and running continuously. Replace the element.

A grounded heating element stays on regardless of thermostat control, causing overheating.

When to call a professional

If the vent is clear and all thermostats and the element test normally, the control board relay may be stuck in the on position. A technician should diagnose and replace the control board.
