Samsung Oven/Range Error Code SE — Keypad / Touchpad Fault

Moderate Fix 20–45 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Soft cloth

What this means

The SE error code on Samsung ovens indicates that the control board is detecting a continuously pressed or shorted key on the membrane touchpad. This can happen when moisture gets behind the keypad, when a key physically sticks, or when the membrane ribbon cable develops a fault. In some cases a simple power reset clears the code, but a persistent SE usually means the touchpad or control board needs attention.

Alternate codes: 5E

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Power cycle the oven

Turn off the circuit breaker that supplies the oven for at least two minutes, then restore power. Try pressing every button on the touchpad to confirm the error clears.

If the code returns within seconds of powering on, the membrane is likely shorted — skip ahead to step 3.

2

Clean the touchpad surface

Wipe the touchpad with a damp (not wet) soft cloth. Remove any food residue, grease, or moisture around the edges of the keypad that could be causing a phantom key press.

Never spray cleaner directly onto the touchpad — spray onto the cloth first to prevent liquid from seeping behind the membrane.

3

Inspect the membrane ribbon cable

Unplug the oven or switch off the breaker. Remove the screws holding the rear control panel cover. Carefully disconnect the flat ribbon cable that runs from the touchpad membrane to the control board. Check for burn marks, corrosion, or bent pins. Reseat the connector firmly and reassemble.

Take a photo before disconnecting anything so you can reference it during reassembly.

4

Replace the touchpad or control board

If the error persists after reseating, the membrane touchpad itself may need replacement. On some Samsung models the touchpad and control board are sold as a single assembly. Order the correct part for your model number and swap it in.

Check Samsung's parts lookup tool with your model number — on many models the touchpad cannot be purchased separately from the overlay panel.

When to call a professional

If the code persists after a full touchpad/overlay replacement, the electronic oven control board may have a shorted input circuit and should be diagnosed by a technician.
