Samsung Dishwasher Error Code 5E — Drain Error
What this means
The 5E error code means the dishwasher is unable to drain water properly. Standing water in the bottom of the tub after a cycle is the telltale sign. This is commonly caused by a clogged drain filter, blocked drain hose, or a garbage disposal connection issue.
Alternate codes: 5C, SE
Step-by-step fix
3 stepsClean the drain filter
Remove the bottom rack and the drain filter assembly (usually twists out). Clean it under running water with a soft brush to remove food debris, grease, and buildup.
The filter should be cleaned at least monthly. Food particles are the #1 cause of dishwasher drain issues.
Check the drain hose
The drain hose runs from the dishwasher to the garbage disposal or sink drain. Check for kinks. If connected to a garbage disposal, make sure the disposal's knockout plug was removed during installation.
A very common mistake: new garbage disposals ship with a knockout plug that must be removed if a dishwasher is connected.
Run the garbage disposal
If your dishwasher drains through a garbage disposal, run the disposal to clear it. Food waste in the disposal can block the dishwasher's drain path.
Run the disposal with water flowing before starting the dishwasher to ensure the drain path is clear.
When to call a professional
If the filter, hose, and disposal are all clear, the drain pump may be faulty or jammed. This requires removing the dishwasher to access.
