F7 E1

Maytag Washer Error Code F7 E1 — Motor Speed Sensing Error

Moderate Repair 30–60 minutes Tools: Socket wrench set, Multimeter, Phillips screwdriver

What this means

The F7 E1 error on Maytag washers means the motor speed sensor (tachometer) is not detecting proper RPM from the drive motor. This can be caused by an overloaded drum, shipping bolts left in place on new units, a faulty motor rotor position sensor, or a failed drive motor. The washer will stop mid-cycle when this error appears.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Reduce the load size

An overloaded drum puts excessive strain on the motor. Remove some items and restart the cycle to see if the error clears.

Maytag front-loaders should be loaded to about three-quarters full — never packed tight.

2

Check for shipping bolts (new units)

If the washer was recently installed, check the back panel for shipping bolts that lock the drum in place during transport. Remove all shipping hardware.

Most Maytag front-loaders have 3–4 shipping bolts on the rear panel.

3

Inspect the motor rotor position sensor

Unplug the washer. Access the motor from the back panel. Locate the rotor position sensor on the motor and check the wire harness connection. Use a multimeter to verify resistance (typically 10–15 ohms between sensor pins).

A loose connector on the sensor is one of the most frequent causes of F7 E1.

4

Test the drive motor

If the sensor checks out, the motor itself may be failing. Listen for grinding sounds during operation and test motor windings with a multimeter for proper resistance.

If the motor windings read open (infinite resistance) or shorted (near zero), the motor needs replacement.

When to call a professional

Motor replacement requires significant disassembly and electrical knowledge. If the motor or control board is at fault, professional repair is recommended.
