Maytag Washer Error Code F9 E1 — Drain Error
What this means
The F9 E1 error on Maytag washers (which share the Whirlpool platform) means the drain system is blocked or the pump is failing. This is the most common Maytag washer error.
Alternate codes: DRAINING
Step-by-step fix
3 stepsClean the drain pump filter
Open the filter access panel at the lower front of the washer. Place towels and pan below. Slowly open the filter and drain water. Clean debris from the filter.
Coins, hair ties, bobby pins, and small socks are the most common items found.
Check the drain hose
Inspect for kinks. Ensure it's at the proper height (39–96 inches above floor at the drain connection) and not pushed too far into the standpipe.
The drain hose should only go 6–8 inches into the standpipe.
Listen to the drain pump
Run a drain cycle and listen. Humming = pump is jammed. Silence = pump motor has failed. Normal whooshing = pump is working.
If the pump is jammed, an object may have gotten past the filter.
When to call a professional
Pump replacement requires tilting or partially disassembling the machine.
