E6

LG Washer Error Code E6 — Clutch / Motor Error

Advanced Fix 45–90 minutes Tools: Socket wrench set, Screwdriver, Multimeter

What this means

The E6 error code indicates a problem with the washer's clutch mechanism or direct drive motor. On top-load models, it often points to a worn clutch assembly. On front-load models, it may indicate a stator or rotor issue. The washer cannot properly agitate or spin when this error appears.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Reset the washer

Unplug the washer for 15 minutes, then plug it back in and try running a cycle. A temporary motor control glitch can sometimes trigger the E6 code.

2

Check for overloading

If the error occurred during a large load, remove some items and restart. The motor may have stalled due to excessive weight in the drum.

3

Inspect the motor and hall sensor

Remove the rear or bottom panel to access the motor area. Check the hall sensor (rotor position sensor) first — test its resistance (should be 13–15 ohms). Also visually inspect the stator for burn marks and the rotor for damaged magnets.

On direct-drive LG washers, the motor is attached directly to the back of the drum.

4

Check the clutch assembly (top-load models)

On top-load models, the clutch is located beneath the outer tub. If the washer agitates but won't spin (or vice versa), the clutch assembly may be worn. This requires removing the tub to access.

A burnt clutch often produces a burning rubber smell during or after the spin cycle.

When to call a professional

E6 repairs often require significant disassembly. If you're not comfortable removing the tub or replacing the motor components, a technician is recommended. Clutch replacement on top-load models is particularly labor-intensive.
