LG Washer Error Code AE — Water Leak Detected

Advanced Fix 30–90 minutes Tools: Towels, Flashlight, Screwdriver, Pliers

What this means

The AE error code means the LG washer's leak sensor has detected water in the base pan of the machine. This is a safety feature that shuts down the washer to prevent flooding. Common causes include a leaking tub seal, a loose hose clamp, a cracked hose, or a damaged door gasket.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Turn off the water supply

Immediately turn off both hot and cold water supply valves behind the washer. Unplug the machine. Place towels around the base to absorb any leaked water.

Do not attempt to run another cycle until the leak source is identified.

2

Check the door gasket (front-load)

Inspect the rubber door gasket (boot) for tears, holes, or debris that could prevent a proper seal. Pull back the folds of the gasket and look for damage. Clean any buildup of mold or residue.

A torn door gasket is the most common source of front-load washer leaks.

3

Inspect internal hoses and connections

Remove the rear and/or bottom panels. Use a flashlight to check all internal hoses, hose clamps, and connections for drips or moisture. Pay special attention to the tub-to-pump hose, the dispenser hose, and the recirculation hose.

Run a short cycle with the panels off to observe where water appears (keep hands clear of moving parts).

4

Check the tub seal

If no external hose leak is found, the main tub seal (where the shaft enters the outer tub) may be leaking. Water dripping from the bottom center of the tub indicates a failed tub seal and bearing.

A tub seal and bearing replacement is a major repair — weigh the cost against the age of the machine.

When to call a professional

If the leak is coming from the tub seal/bearing area, this is a significant repair that involves disassembling the entire drum assembly. It can cost $250–$400 in parts and labor. For older machines, it may not be cost-effective.
