Kenmore Washer Error Code OE — Drain Error / Water Not Draining
What this means
The OE error code on Kenmore washers signals a drain failure — the machine has been unable to pump out the water within the allowed time. This code is common on Kenmore washers manufactured by LG. The root cause is usually a clogged drain pump filter, blocked drain hose, or a failed drain pump motor.
Alternate codes: 0E
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsDrain residual water and clean the pump filter
Open the small access panel at the lower front of the washer. Place towels and a shallow pan on the floor. Pull out the small drain hose (if equipped) and let water drain into the pan. Then unscrew the pump filter cap and remove it. Clear away lint, hair, coins, and any other debris.
Check pockets before every wash — coins and small objects are the number one cause of drain pump clogs.
Inspect the drain hose
Disconnect the main drain hose from the standpipe or utility sink. Check for kinks or blockages by running water through it. Blow air through the hose to confirm it's clear.
If the drain hose has a permanent kink from being pressed against the wall, replace it — a kinked hose will keep causing problems.
Check the standpipe for clogs
Insert the drain hose into the standpipe no more than 8 inches. Pour a bucket of water into the standpipe to confirm it drains freely. If it backs up, snake the drain line.
Fabric softener residue can build up in standpipes over time — a monthly hot water flush helps prevent this.
Listen to the drain pump
Reconnect everything and start a drain cycle. Listen for the drain pump — it should hum loudly. If it's silent, check the pump's electrical connector. If it hums but no water moves, the impeller is likely broken.
A grinding or rattling noise from the pump usually means a foreign object is caught in the impeller.
When to call a professional
If the drain path is clear and the pump motor isn't running despite having power, the pump motor or the main control board may need replacement. Call a technician for a proper electrical diagnosis.
