GE Dishwasher Error Code C8 — Detergent Cup Blocked
What this means
The C8 error code on GE dishwashers means the detergent cup dispenser door was unable to open at the proper time during the wash cycle. This is usually caused by a tall dish, pot handle, or baking sheet blocking the dispenser door from swinging open. It can also be caused by old detergent caked inside the dispenser or a broken dispenser latch mechanism.
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsCheck for obstructions
Open the dishwasher and look at the inside of the door where the detergent dispenser is located. Check whether any dishes, pots, pans, or utensils in the lower rack are positioned so they block the dispenser door from opening. Rearrange the items to clear the path.
The dispenser door swings open to the left. Make sure nothing in the lower left area of the rack can block its arc.
Clean the detergent dispenser
If old detergent has caked or hardened inside the dispenser, use a damp cloth with warm water to clean out all residue. Make sure the dispenser door swings freely and snaps shut without resistance.
Gel and liquid detergents are more prone to leaving sticky residue than powder or pods. Wipe the dispenser after each use if you notice buildup.
Test the dispenser latch
Close the dispenser door and check that the latch clicks securely. Then manually release it to make sure the spring mechanism pushes the door open with force. If the spring is weak or the latch does not engage, the dispenser assembly may need replacement.
A weak spring will cause the door to open too slowly and may not release the detergent at the right time during the cycle.
Run a test cycle
After clearing the obstruction and cleaning the dispenser, add detergent and run a normal wash cycle. Check partway through the cycle (after the main wash begins) that the dispenser opened and the detergent was released.
You can pause the cycle and open the door briefly to check if the dispenser has opened.
When to call a professional
If the dispenser latch or spring mechanism is broken and the door will not open properly, the entire dispenser assembly needs replacement. This is a straightforward part swap but requires removing the inner door panel.
