GE Dishwasher Error Code C1 — Drain Pump Exceeded 2 Minutes
What this means
The C1 error code on GE dishwashers means the drain pump has been running continuously for more than 2 minutes, indicating the water is not draining properly. This is typically caused by a clogged drain hose, a blocked air gap, food debris in the drain sump filter, or a kink in the drain line. In some cases, the garbage disposal knockout plug may not have been removed during installation.
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsCheck the air gap and garbage disposal
If your dishwasher drains through an air gap on the countertop, remove the cap and clean out any debris. If it connects to a garbage disposal, run the disposal with water to clear any blockage. For new disposal installations, make sure the dishwasher knockout plug has been removed from inside the disposal inlet.
A blocked air gap is the number one cause of C1 errors. Remove the cap and look inside — you will often find food buildup.
Inspect the drain hose
Pull the dishwasher forward enough to access the drain hose under the sink. Check for kinks, clogs, or a hose that has slipped off its connection. The hose should loop up to the height of the countertop before descending to the disposal or drain to prevent backflow.
If the drain hose runs downhill the entire way from the dishwasher to the drain, water can siphon back into the tub. Create a high loop under the countertop.
Clean the drain sump filter
Open the dishwasher and remove the bottom rack. Locate the drain filter or fine filter at the bottom of the tub. Twist or lift it out and rinse under running water to remove food particles, grease, and debris.
Clean the sump filter monthly if you do not pre-rinse your dishes. Food particles are the most common cause of slow draining.
Reset the dishwasher
Press the Start/Reset button or turn off the circuit breaker for 2 minutes to clear the error. Restart a wash cycle and monitor to confirm the water drains properly.
If the C1 code returns after clearing the drain path, the drain pump motor itself may be weak or failing.
When to call a professional
If the drain hose, air gap, and filter are all clear but the C1 code persists, the drain pump may be failing and need replacement. A technician can test the pump motor and replace it.
