F9 E1

Whirlpool Washer Error Code F9 E1 — Drain Error

Moderate Fix 20–40 minutes Tools: Towels, Shallow pan

What this means

The F9 E1 error means the washer attempted to drain but water remains in the tub. This is commonly caused by a clogged drain pump filter, kinked drain hose, or an obstruction in the drain pump.

Alternate codes: DRAINING

Step-by-step fix

3 steps
1

Clean the drain pump filter

Locate the drain pump filter access panel (lower front of washer). Place towels and a pan underneath. Open the filter slowly and let water drain. Remove and clean the filter of debris.

Coins, hair ties, and small socks are the most common items found in the filter.

2

Check the drain hose

Pull the washer out and inspect the drain hose for kinks. Make sure it's not pushed more than 8 inches into the standpipe.

The drain hose should be 39-96 inches above the floor where it connects to the drain.

3

Run a drain/spin cycle

After cleaning the filter and checking the hose, run a drain and spin cycle to verify the issue is resolved.

If the pump makes a humming noise but doesn't drain, an object may be jammed in the pump impeller.

When to call a professional

If the pump is jammed or not running, it needs replacement. Accessing the pump requires tilting or partially disassembling the machine.
