Whirlpool Oven Error Code F4 E2 — Lower Oven Temperature Sensor Open Circuit

Moderate DIY Repair 20–35 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter

What this means

The F4 E2 error code on Whirlpool double ovens indicates the lower oven temperature sensor (RTD probe) has an open circuit — meaning the resistance is reading infinitely high. The sensor wire may be broken, the connector may be loose, or the sensor element itself has failed. The lower oven will not operate until the sensor circuit is restored.

Alternate codes: F4E2

Step-by-step fix

3 steps
1

Locate the lower oven temperature sensor

Open the lower oven door. The sensor probe enters the oven cavity through the upper rear wall of the lower oven, just like in the upper oven. It is a thin metal rod about 6–8 inches long.

The sensor is easily confused with the broil igniter — the sensor is a thin rod with two wires, the igniter is a flat ceramic element.

2

Test the sensor for resistance

Disconnect the sensor connector at the rear of the oven (follow the sensor wires out the back). Measure resistance — it should read approximately 1,080 ohms at room temperature. An infinite (OL) reading confirms an open circuit.

Also test continuity of each wire from the sensor connector pin to the control board connector pin to check for broken wires.

3

Replace the lower oven temperature sensor

Remove the mounting screw inside the lower oven cavity. Pull the sensor probe out. Disconnect the old sensor wire connector. Install the new sensor, route the wire, and connect it to the harness.

Ensure the sensor probe is fully inserted and the mounting screw is snug but not overtightened.

When to call a professional

If the new sensor still shows an open circuit reading, the wiring between the sensor and the control board may be broken inside the oven frame.
