Samsung Microwave Error Code SE — Keypad / Touchpad Short or Stuck Key
What this means
The SE error code on Samsung microwaves indicates the control board is detecting a continuously pressed or shorted key on the touchpad membrane. This is one of the most common Samsung microwave errors. Moisture, grease, or general wear can cause the membrane layers to short together, triggering a phantom key press. The microwave may beep repeatedly, display SE, and refuse to accept input.
Alternate codes: 5E
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsPower cycle the microwave
Unplug the microwave or turn off the breaker for two minutes. Restore power. If the code clears, press each button to verify normal response.
If the code returns immediately before you press anything, the membrane is almost certainly shorted internally.
Clean the touchpad surface
Wipe the entire touchpad area with a soft cloth dampened with warm water and a small amount of dish soap. Pay special attention to the edges and seams where grease can seep behind the membrane.
Never spray cleaner directly on the touchpad. Spray onto the cloth to avoid liquid entering the membrane layers.
Inspect the ribbon cable connection
Unplug the microwave. Remove the outer cabinet screws and carefully lift off the outer case. WARNING: Microwave capacitors can hold a lethal charge — do not touch any internal components other than the touchpad and control board connectors. Locate the flat ribbon cable from the touchpad membrane to the control board. Check for corrosion or damage, and reseat it firmly.
If you are not comfortable working inside a microwave, stop here and call a professional. The high-voltage capacitor can be dangerous.
Replace the touchpad membrane or control panel
If the error persists, the touchpad membrane needs replacement. On many Samsung microwaves, the membrane and control panel are sold as a single unit. Order the correct part for your model, disconnect the old panel, and install the new one.
Take photos of all connections before disassembly. Label wires if multiple connectors look similar.
When to call a professional
Due to the dangerous high-voltage capacitor inside microwaves, many homeowners prefer professional service. If you're not experienced with microwave repair, call a technician — especially if the touchpad replacement doesn't clear the error.
