E-97

Samsung Microwave Error Code E-97 — Power Relay Stuck

Professional Required 30–60 minutes Tools: Multimeter, Phillips screwdriver

What this means

The E-97 error code on Samsung microwaves indicates a power relay on the main control board is stuck — either welded closed (stuck on) or failed open (stuck off). Relays control power to the magnetron, turntable motor, and other components. A stuck relay can cause the microwave to not heat, to run continuously, or to display E-97 as a safety precaution. This is typically caused by a power surge, aging relay contacts, or component failure on the control board.

Alternate codes: E97

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Power cycle the microwave

Unplug the microwave for five minutes. Plug it back in and test. A transient power surge can sometimes cause a relay to stick temporarily. If it releases on power-up, the error should clear.

If the microwave starts heating immediately upon plugging in (before pressing Start), unplug it immediately — a relay is stuck closed and this is a safety hazard.

2

Listen for relay clicks during operation

With the microwave plugged in, listen for clicking sounds when you press Start and when the cooking cycle ends. Relays produce audible clicks when they engage and disengage. Missing clicks indicate a stuck relay.

You should hear at least two distinct clicks — one when the microwave starts and one when it stops.

3

Visually inspect the control board relays

Unplug the microwave. Remove the outer cabinet. Locate the relays on the main control board — they are small rectangular components, usually blue or black. Look for burn marks, melted plastic, or discoloration around the relay and its solder joints.

WARNING: Do not touch the high-voltage capacitor. Work only in the control board area.

4

Replace the control board (professional recommended)

If a relay is stuck, the entire control board typically needs replacement. While individual relays can sometimes be desoldered and replaced, this requires advanced soldering skills and knowledge of the specific relay specifications. Most technicians replace the whole board.

Compare the board replacement cost to the price of a new microwave. For older units, a new microwave may be more cost-effective.

When to call a professional

A stuck power relay is a safety concern — the microwave could run uncontrolled. This repair involves high-voltage components and is strongly recommended for professional service. Do not continue using a microwave with a stuck relay.
