Miele Washing Machine Error Code F50 — Motor Speed Fault
What this means
Error F50 on Miele washing machines indicates the motor is not reaching the target RPM or its speed is fluctuating beyond acceptable limits. Miele uses inverter-driven motors on most modern models. Causes include worn carbon brushes (on older brush-type motors), a faulty motor controller/inverter, a loose or broken drive belt, an overloaded drum, or a faulty tachometer/speed sensor on the motor.
Alternate codes: F 50
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsCheck for overloading
Open the door (if possible) and check if the drum is overloaded. Remove some items and retry. An overloaded drum can prevent the motor from reaching speed, especially during the spin phase.
Miele recommends not exceeding the rated load capacity. Heavy items like bedding or towels can be deceptively heavy when wet.
Inspect the drive belt (if applicable)
On belt-driven Miele models, remove the rear panel and check the drive belt. Look for cracks, fraying, glazing, or excessive slack. A worn belt can slip under load. Replace if damaged.
Miele belts should be firm but have about 1 cm of play when pressed in the middle of the longest span.
Check the motor carbon brushes (if applicable)
On older Miele models with brushed motors, the carbon brushes can wear down. Remove each brush from its holder and measure the length — if less than 1.5 cm, they need replacement. Also check that the commutator surface is smooth and not scored.
Always replace both brushes at the same time, even if only one looks worn.
Test the motor tachometer
The tachometer (speed sensor) is a small coil on the back of the motor. Disconnect it and measure resistance — typically 100–300 ohms. Also check that the tachometer magnet on the motor shaft is intact.
Spin the motor shaft by hand while measuring AC voltage at the tachometer terminals — you should see a small voltage pulse with each rotation.
When to call a professional
If the motor, brushes, belt, and tachometer all test fine but F50 persists, the motor inverter/controller board has likely failed.
