Miele Washing Machine Error Code F16 — Excess Foam Detected

Easy Fix 10–30 minutes Tools: None (possibly fabric softener or cooking oil to reduce foam)

What this means

Error F16 on Miele washing machines indicates the pressure sensor has detected excess foam. Too many suds can prevent proper rinsing, block the drain pump, and cause the machine to extend the cycle repeatedly trying to rinse away the foam. This is typically caused by using too much detergent, using the wrong type of detergent (hand-wash or non-HE detergent in an HE machine), or contamination from a previous wash with too much softener.

Alternate codes: F 16

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Wait for the cycle to finish

The machine will typically attempt extra rinse cycles to clear the foam. Let it run. It may extend the cycle significantly. If it gives up and stops with F16 still displayed, proceed to the next step.

Do not open the door if you see foam pressing against the door glass — it may overflow.

2

Run a rinse cycle with no detergent

Select a rinse-only or drain and spin cycle. Do not add any detergent. This will help flush out the remaining foam. You may need to repeat this 2–3 times.

Adding a tablespoon of cooking oil or a capful of fabric softener to the drum can help break down the foam faster.

3

Adjust your detergent usage

For future washes, reduce the amount of detergent. Miele machines use very little water (they are highly efficient), so you typically need less detergent than the package recommends. Use HE (High Efficiency) detergent only.

Miele recommends their own branded detergent for optimal results, but any HE-rated detergent works. Use approximately 1/3 less than the package says for soft water areas.

4

Clean the detergent drawer and sump

Remove the detergent drawer and rinse it under hot water to remove any built-up detergent residue. Also clean the drawer cavity inside the machine. Residual detergent from the drawer can contribute to excess foaming.

Gel and liquid detergents leave more residue in the drawer than powder detergents.

When to call a professional

F16 does not typically require professional service. If excess foam issues persist despite correct detergent usage, the pressure sensor may be oversensitive and need calibration.
