F01

Miele Washing Machine Error Code F01 — NTC Temperature Sensor Short Circuit

Moderate Repair 20–40 minutes Tools: Screwdriver set, Multimeter

What this means

Error F01 on Miele washing machines indicates the NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) temperature sensor has shorted. The control board reads the sensor resistance as near zero, which corresponds to an impossibly high temperature. The machine will not heat the water and may abort the cycle. This is typically caused by a failed sensor, water ingress into the sensor connector, or a wiring short.

Alternate codes: F 01, F1

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Power-cycle the machine

Unplug the washing machine for 5 minutes, then reconnect. Start a cold wash cycle. If F01 appears even on cold wash (where heating is not needed), the control board is reading the shorted sensor at startup.

The machine checks sensor integrity at power-on, so a short-circuit is detected immediately.

2

Locate and test the NTC sensor

Unplug the machine. The NTC sensor is usually embedded in or near the heating element at the bottom of the drum. Access it from the back panel. Disconnect the sensor connector and measure resistance — at room temperature it should read approximately 5,000–15,000 ohms depending on the model. A reading near 0 ohms confirms a short circuit.

If the connector is wet, dry it thoroughly and re-test. Moisture can cause a false short-circuit reading.

3

Check the wiring

Inspect the wires between the NTC sensor and the control board. Look for damaged insulation that could allow the two wires to touch each other or contact the metal frame.

Wires near the heating element are exposed to high heat — the insulation can become brittle and crack over time.

4

Replace the NTC sensor

If the sensor reads near 0 ohms when disconnected, it has internally shorted and must be replaced. The sensor typically pushes into a rubber grommet in the heater housing. Pull out the old one and push in the new one.

Apply a small amount of silicone grease to the sensor housing to make insertion easier and improve the seal against moisture.

When to call a professional

If the NTC sensor and wiring test normal but F01 persists, the control board's sensor input circuit may be faulty.
