Maytag Dryer Error Code F22 — Exhaust Thermistor Fault
What this means
The F22 error on Maytag dryers indicates the exhaust thermistor (temperature sensor) is providing an out-of-range signal to the control board. This sensor monitors the air temperature leaving the dryer drum. A faulty thermistor can cause the dryer to overheat, not heat at all, or shut down prematurely.
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsLocate the exhaust thermistor
Unplug the dryer. Remove the lower front panel or back panel to access the blower housing area. The exhaust thermistor is typically mounted on or near the blower housing or exhaust duct.
On Maytag Bravos dryers, the thermistor is usually on the blower housing near the lint trap duct.
Test the thermistor
Disconnect the thermistor wires and measure resistance with a multimeter. At room temperature, it should read approximately 10,000–11,500 ohms. An open (infinite) or shorted (near 0) reading means it is faulty.
Warm the sensor slightly with your hand — the resistance should decrease smoothly. Erratic readings indicate a failing sensor.
Check the wiring
Inspect the wires from the thermistor to the control board connector. Look for broken, pinched, or burned wires.
Vibration from the dryer can loosen push-on connectors over time. Reseat all connections firmly.
Replace the thermistor if faulty
Remove the mounting screw or clip, disconnect the old thermistor, and install the replacement. Reconnect the wiring and run a timed dry cycle to verify.
Thermistors are inexpensive — if in doubt, replace rather than risking an overheating event.
When to call a professional
If the thermistor tests within range and wiring is intact, the main control board may be misinterpreting the signal. Professional board-level diagnosis is needed.
