Maytag Dryer Error Code E1 — Thermistor Open Circuit
What this means
The E1 error code on Maytag dryers indicates the exhaust thermistor (temperature sensor) has an open circuit. The thermistor monitors exhaust temperature and signals the control board to regulate heat. When the circuit is open, the dryer cannot safely control its heating element and will shut down to prevent overheating.
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsLocate the exhaust thermistor
Unplug the dryer. The exhaust thermistor is typically mounted on the blower housing or exhaust duct at the rear of the dryer. Remove the back panel to access it.
Consult your model's wiring diagram (usually taped inside the control console) for the exact location.
Check the wiring connections
Inspect the wire harness leading to the thermistor. Look for loose, burned, or disconnected terminals. Reconnect any loose wires and replace burned connectors.
Vibration during operation is a common cause of loose thermistor connections.
Test the thermistor with a multimeter
Disconnect the thermistor wires. Set your multimeter to resistance (ohms). At room temperature (around 75°F), the thermistor should read approximately 10,000–12,000 ohms. An open reading (OL/infinity) confirms the thermistor is bad.
Thermistor resistance decreases as temperature increases — this is normal.
Replace the thermistor
Remove the single mounting screw holding the thermistor in place. Disconnect the wires, install the new thermistor, reconnect the wires, and run a timed dry cycle to verify.
This is a quick swap — the thermistor just slides out after the screw is removed.
When to call a professional
If the new thermistor shows the same error, the control board's thermistor input circuit may be damaged, requiring board-level repair.
