LG Dishwasher Error Code SE4 — Steam Generator Low Temperature Error (TrueSteam)
What this means
The SE4 error code appears on LG dishwashers equipped with TrueSteam technology. It indicates the steam generator failed to reach its target operating temperature within the expected time frame. This can be caused by a failed steam heater element, a faulty NTC thermistor giving incorrect temperature readings, a control board relay that is not sending power to the heater, or excessive heat loss due to a damaged steam generator housing. The dishwasher will operate normally for standard wash cycles but steam sanitization will not function. To check the steam error status, press and hold SPRAY + HALF LOAD simultaneously.
Alternate codes: SE 4
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsPower-reset the dishwasher
Turn off the circuit breaker for 1 minute, then restore power. Run a cycle with steam enabled. Check the steam error status afterward by pressing SPRAY + HALF LOAD. If SE0 appears, the error was temporary.
A temporary voltage drop during the previous cycle can prevent the steam heater from reaching temperature.
Confirm proper water supply
The steam generator needs water to heat. If the generator ran dry (SE3 condition), it cannot reach temperature either. Ensure water supply is fully open and the inlet screen is clean.
An SE4 following an SE3 usually means the root cause is water supply, not the heater itself.
Test the steam heater element
Unplug the dishwasher and locate the steam generator heater. Disconnect the heater leads and test with a multimeter set to ohms. The heater should read a low resistance (typically 10–30 ohms). An OL reading means the heater is open and needs replacement.
Also check for continuity between each heater terminal and the metal housing — any continuity indicates a ground fault.
Check the NTC thermistor and control board
Test the steam generator NTC thermistor for correct resistance at room temperature (approximately 10,000–12,000 ohms). If the thermistor is in spec, the control board may not be sending voltage to the steam heater relay.
Measuring voltage at the heater terminals while the steam cycle is active (with power on) should only be done by a qualified technician.
When to call a professional
SE4 errors usually require professional diagnosis and repair. The steam heater element, thermistor, and control board relay all need testing with power applied, which should be performed by a certified technician.
