KitchenAid Dryer Error Code E4 — Drum Rotation Failure
What this means
Error code E4 indicates the dryer drum rotation speed has dropped to zero during a drying cycle. The drum must rotate continuously to tumble clothes and ensure even drying. This can be caused by a broken or worn drive belt, a faulty drum motor, a seized drum bearing or roller, or an overloaded dryer.
Step-by-step fix
5 stepsCheck for overloading
If the drum was overloaded, remove some items and restart the cycle. An overly heavy load can stall the drum motor.
The drum should be no more than three-quarters full for efficient drying.
Listen for motor sounds
Restart the dryer with a small load and listen. If you hear the motor humming but the drum isn't turning, the drive belt is likely broken.
If there is no sound at all, the motor or its starting switch may be faulty.
Inspect the drive belt
Unplug the dryer and remove the front panel. Check the drive belt that wraps around the drum and the motor pulley. A broken belt is the most common cause.
The belt is a thin, flat band — if it has snapped, it will be hanging loose inside the cabinet.
Replace the drive belt
Thread the new belt around the drum, through the idler pulley, and around the motor pulley. Reassemble and test.
The ribbed side of the belt faces inward toward the drum. Take a photo of the routing before removing the old belt.
Check drum rollers
While the front panel is off, spin the drum by hand. If it doesn't spin freely, the drum support rollers may be worn and need replacement.
Replace rollers in pairs — even if only one is worn, the other will follow soon.
When to call a professional
If the drive belt and rollers are in good condition but the drum still won't spin, the motor may need replacement, which requires significant disassembly.
