Er FD

Kenmore Refrigerator Error Code Er FD — Freezer Defrost Error

Moderate DIY Repair 30–60 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, Hair dryer, 1/4-inch nut driver

What this means

The Er FD error code on Kenmore Elite refrigerators indicates the freezer defrost cycle failed to complete. The evaporator coils in the freezer are not being defrosted properly, leading to frost buildup that blocks airflow and reduces cooling efficiency. This can be caused by a failed defrost heater, a faulty defrost thermostat (bi-metal), or a defective defrost control board/timer.

Alternate codes: ErFD, Er Fd

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Check for frost buildup

Remove the rear panel inside the freezer compartment. Inspect the evaporator coils for heavy frost or ice. If the coils are covered in a thick layer of ice, the defrost system has failed.

Use a hair dryer on low heat to melt the ice if it is blocking access to the defrost components.

2

Test the defrost heater

Unplug the refrigerator. Locate the defrost heater under the evaporator coils. Disconnect the wires and test for continuity with a multimeter. The heater should show 20–50 ohms of resistance.

If the heater reads infinite (OL), it is burned out and needs replacement.

3

Test the defrost thermostat (bi-metal)

The defrost thermostat is clipped to the evaporator tubing. At room temperature, it should show continuity. If it reads open at room temperature, it has failed and will prevent the heater from running.

The thermostat is a safety device — it opens at high temperature to prevent overheating. A failed-open thermostat permanently cuts heater power.

4

Replace the failed component

Replace whichever component tested defective — heater, thermostat, or both. Reassemble the freezer panel and run the refrigerator. The defrost cycle should run automatically within 8–12 hours.

Consider replacing both the heater and thermostat together since they are inexpensive and failure of one puts stress on the other.

When to call a professional

If both the heater and thermostat test correctly, the defrost control board or timer may be faulty. A technician can force a defrost cycle to verify.
