Kenmore Dryer Error Code E1 — Thermistor/Temperature Sensor Failure

Moderate Fix 30–60 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, 1/4-inch nut driver

What this means

The E1 error code on Kenmore dryers indicates the thermistor (temperature sensor) has failed, is open, or is reading a temperature outside the expected range. The thermistor monitors the exhaust air temperature so the control board can regulate the heating element. Without accurate temperature readings, the dryer cannot safely operate.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Reset the dryer

Unplug the dryer for 5 minutes and plug it back in. If the thermistor experienced a temporary glitch due to excessive heat or moisture, the reset may clear it.

If the error appeared after a very hot cycle, let the dryer cool completely before restarting — the sensor may need time to return to normal range.

2

Locate the thermistor

Unplug the dryer. Remove the lower front panel or the rear panel (depending on your model). The thermistor is typically a small oval or cylindrical component mounted in the blower housing or exhaust duct area, attached by two wires.

Refer to your model's tech sheet (usually taped inside the dryer door or behind the lower panel) for the exact thermistor location.

3

Test the thermistor with a multimeter

Disconnect the two wires from the thermistor. Set your multimeter to resistance (ohms). At room temperature (about 70°F/21°C), a working thermistor should read approximately 10,000–12,000 ohms. If it reads open (infinite) or zero, it's failed.

If you have a heat gun, gently warm the thermistor and watch the resistance change — a good thermistor will show decreasing resistance as temperature rises.

4

Replace the thermistor

Remove the one or two screws holding the thermistor in place. Pull it out and install the new one. Reconnect the wires — there is no polarity, so either wire goes on either terminal.

Thermistors are inexpensive and easy to replace — when in doubt, swap it out rather than spending time troubleshooting further.

When to call a professional

If the new thermistor still triggers the error, the main control board's temperature sensing circuit may be faulty. A technician can verify the board and check the wiring harness for damage.
