Kenmore Dryer Error Code AF — Airflow Restriction / Vent Blockage
What this means
The AF error code on Kenmore dryers indicates reduced airflow through the exhaust venting system. Restricted airflow causes the dryer to overheat, take longer to dry clothes, and waste energy. In severe cases, lint buildup in the vent is a fire hazard. This is one of the most important dryer errors to address promptly.
Alternate codes: AF1
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsClean the lint filter
Remove the lint filter and clean off all lint. Wash the filter with warm soapy water to remove dryer sheet residue buildup that blocks air passage. Let it dry completely before reinstalling.
Pour water on the screen — if it pools instead of passing through, residue is blocking the mesh and needs washing.
Disconnect and clean the vent duct
Unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall. Disconnect the vent duct from the back of the dryer. Use a vent cleaning brush kit (long flexible brush) to clean lint from inside the duct. Also vacuum out the vent outlet port on the dryer itself.
Use a leaf blower from the dryer end to push lint out the exterior vent — it's the fastest way to clear a long vent run.
Clean the exterior vent hood
Go outside and locate the vent hood where the duct exits the house. Remove the cover and clear any lint, bird nests, or debris. Make sure the damper flap opens freely.
Install a pest guard over the exterior hood to prevent birds and rodents from nesting inside the vent.
Check for crushed or kinked duct
Inspect the duct between the dryer and the wall for crushing, kinks, or excessive length. Replace flexible foil duct with rigid or semi-rigid aluminum duct for better airflow. Minimize the number of 90-degree bends.
Every 90-degree bend in the vent adds the equivalent of 5 feet to the total vent length — keep bends to a minimum.
When to call a professional
For long vent runs (over 25 feet), roof-mounted vents, or if you can't reach the exterior vent hood, hire a professional vent cleaning service. They have commercial equipment to clear the entire run.
