GE Washer Error Code EF1 — Clogged Drain

Easy Fix 15–30 minutes Tools: Towels, Shallow pan, Pliers

What this means

The EF1 error code on GE washers indicates a clogged drain system. The drain pump is running but water isn't leaving the tub fast enough. The blockage could be in the drain pump filter, drain hose, standpipe, or household plumbing. Foreign objects like coins, buttons, hair clips, and lint are the most common culprits.

Step-by-step fix

3 steps
1

Clean the drain pump filter

Locate the drain pump filter access door at the bottom front of the washer. Place towels and a shallow pan underneath. Open the access door and slowly unscrew the filter cap. Let water drain into the pan. Remove any debris from the filter.

There can be a surprising amount of water — have extra towels ready.

2

Check the drain hose

Pull the washer forward and inspect the drain hose for kinks or clogs. Disconnect the hose from the standpipe and check for blockages inside the hose.

3

Run a drain cycle

Reinstall the filter and hose, push the washer back, and run a drain/spin cycle to confirm the EF1 code has cleared.

If the washer drains slowly but does eventually drain, the clog may be in the household plumbing, not the washer.

When to call a professional

If the drain system is clear but the code persists, the drain pump motor may be failing. A technician can test and replace the pump.
