E9

GE Washer Error Code E9 — Detergent Dispenser Error

Easy Fix 10–25 minutes Tools: Soft cloth, Warm water, Phillips screwdriver

What this means

The E9 error code on GE washers indicates a fault with the detergent dispenser mechanism. On models with automatic detergent dispensers, this means the dispenser motor or sensor is not working correctly — the dispenser may not be releasing detergent at the right time, the dispenser tray may be stuck, or the sensor detecting the dispenser position has failed. On some models, this code can also indicate a pressure switch anomaly.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Clean the dispenser drawer

Pull out the detergent dispenser drawer completely (press the release tab if your model has one). Rinse it thoroughly under warm running water to remove dried detergent, fabric softener residue, and any buildup. Clean the cavity where the drawer sits.

A buildup of liquid fabric softener is the most common cause of a stuck dispenser. Use a small brush to clean the siphon caps in the drawer.

2

Check for obstructions in the dispenser housing

With the drawer removed, shine a flashlight into the dispenser housing. Look for hardened detergent, foreign objects, or residue blocking the dispenser mechanism or water jets.

Run warm water through the housing with a cup to flush out residue. Wipe the interior with a damp cloth.

3

Reinstall and test the dispenser

Slide the clean drawer back into the housing until it clicks into place. Start a wash cycle and verify the dispenser activates at the appropriate time during the cycle.

If you have an automatic dispenser system, make sure the dispenser cartridge or pod is properly loaded and not empty.

4

Reset the washer

If the error persists after cleaning, unplug the washer for 5 minutes and plug it back in. This resets the control board and may clear a false dispenser error.

If the E9 code keeps returning after thorough cleaning and resetting, the dispenser motor or position sensor may need replacement.

When to call a professional

If cleaning and resetting do not resolve the E9 code, the dispenser motor assembly or the control board may be faulty. These components require partial disassembly of the washer to access and replace.
