GE Washer Error Code E8 — Drain Problem / Slow Drain

Easy Fix 15–30 minutes Tools: Towels, Bucket, Pliers, Flashlight

What this means

The E8 error code on GE washers indicates a drainage problem. The washer has attempted to drain the tub but water remains after the drain cycle should have completed. This is commonly caused by a clogged drain pump filter, a kinked or blocked drain hose, a faulty drain pump, or an improperly installed drain hose. Small items like coins, buttons, or hairpins frequently clog the pump filter.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Clean the drain pump filter

Locate the drain pump filter access door, usually at the bottom front of the washer behind a small panel. Place towels and a shallow pan underneath. Open the filter cap slowly — water will flow out. Remove any debris, coins, buttons, or lint from the filter.

Open the filter cap very slowly at first to control the water flow. There may be several cups of water behind the filter.

2

Check the drain hose

Pull the washer out and inspect the drain hose. Make sure it is not kinked, crushed, or pushed too far into the standpipe (it should extend no more than 8 inches into the drain pipe). Also check that the standpipe is not clogged.

A drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe can create a siphon seal that prevents drainage.

3

Clear the standpipe or drain

If the drain hose itself is clear, the blockage may be in the standpipe or home plumbing. Pour hot water down the standpipe to check for flow. If it backs up, the pipe needs to be snaked or cleared.

Lint and soap residue accumulate in drain pipes over time. A plumber's snake or enzyme drain cleaner can help clear slow drains.

4

Test the drain pump

If the filter and hose are clear, start a drain cycle and listen for the pump. A working pump makes a steady humming sound and you can feel vibration near the pump housing. If the pump is silent or buzzing without draining, it may need replacement.

A buzzing pump usually means the impeller is jammed. Check the filter housing one more time for a small object lodged against the impeller.

When to call a professional

If the drain paths are all clear but the pump is not moving water, the drain pump motor has likely failed. Replacing the pump requires removing the front or rear panel and disconnecting plumbing connections.
