FF

GE Refrigerator Error Code FF — Freezer Temperature Rising

Moderate Repair 20–60 minutes Tools: Thermometer, Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, Flashlight

What this means

The FF error code on GE refrigerators means the freezer temperature has climbed above the acceptable range for two or more hours. Frozen food may be at risk of thawing. This can be caused by the door being left open, a failed evaporator fan motor, a malfunctioning defrost system, blocked air vents inside the freezer, or a compressor issue. Check the frozen food immediately and discard anything that has fully thawed and reached unsafe temperatures.

Step-by-step fix

5 steps
1

Check the freezer door seal

Inspect the freezer door gasket for gaps, tears, or areas where the seal is not making full contact with the cabinet. Close the door on a dollar bill — if you can pull it out easily, the seal is weak in that area. Also check that the door closes fully and is not blocked by food containers.

Wipe the gasket with warm soapy water to restore its pliability. Petroleum jelly on the gasket can also improve the seal temporarily.

2

Ensure air vents are not blocked

Open the freezer and check that the air vents (usually at the back wall) are not blocked by food packages. Cold air needs to circulate freely from the evaporator to all areas of the freezer.

Leave at least 1 inch of space between food packages and the back wall of the freezer for proper airflow.

3

Listen for the evaporator fan

Open the freezer door and press the door switch to simulate a closed door. Listen for the evaporator fan running behind the back panel of the freezer. If you do not hear the fan, it may be frozen, obstructed, or the motor has failed.

On some GE models, the fan only runs when the door is closed. Pressing the door switch lets you hear it while the door is open.

4

Check for excessive frost buildup

Remove the back panel inside the freezer. If the evaporator coils are encased in heavy frost or ice, the defrost system has failed. The ice blocks airflow and prevents the freezer from cooling. You can manually defrost by unplugging the refrigerator for 24 hours or using a hair dryer on low heat.

If you find heavy frost on the coils, the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer likely needs replacement.

5

Clear the error code

After resolving the issue, press any button on the display panel to clear the FF error code. Monitor the freezer temperature over the next 24 hours to confirm it returns to 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below.

Place a thermometer in the freezer to independently verify the temperature rather than relying only on the display reading.

When to call a professional

If the evaporator fan is running, the defrost system is working, and the door seal is good but the freezer still cannot maintain temperature, the compressor or sealed system may be failing. This requires a licensed refrigeration technician.
