GE Refrigerator Error Code CC — Refrigerator Compartment Too Warm

Moderate Repair 20–60 minutes Tools: Thermometer, Vacuum with brush attachment, Coil brush, Phillips screwdriver

What this means

The CC error code on GE refrigerators indicates the fresh food (refrigerator) compartment temperature is too warm. This is different from the FF code, which relates to the freezer. Common causes include blocked air vents between the freezer and fridge, a failed evaporator fan, dirty condenser coils, a door left ajar, or a malfunctioning damper control that regulates airflow from the freezer to the fridge section.

Step-by-step fix

5 steps
1

Check the door and gasket

Make sure the refrigerator door closes completely and the gasket seals tightly all the way around. Check for food containers preventing full closure. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water.

A common issue is containers on the door shelf that stick out just enough to prevent a full seal — rearrange if needed.

2

Clean the condenser coils

Unplug the refrigerator. Locate the condenser coils — on most GE models, they are behind the lower front grille or on the back of the unit. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment and a coil cleaning brush to remove dust, pet hair, and lint from the coils.

Dirty condenser coils are one of the top reasons a refrigerator cannot maintain temperature. Clean them every 6 to 12 months.

3

Check the air vents between freezer and fridge

Inside the refrigerator, locate the air vents that allow cold air from the freezer to flow into the fridge section (usually at the top rear). Make sure they are not blocked by food items. If you feel no airflow from the vents, the damper control may be stuck closed.

Put your hand near the vent while the compressor is running. You should feel a steady stream of cold air. No airflow means the damper is likely closed or the fan is off.

4

Verify the evaporator fan is running

Open the freezer and listen for the fan. If the fan is not running, cold air is not being circulated from the evaporator to either compartment. Check for ice blocking the fan blade or a failed fan motor.

If you hear a clicking or buzzing from the fan area, the motor may be seized. Ice on the fan blade can also cause this.

5

Clear the error and monitor temperature

After addressing the issue, press any button on the display to clear the CC code. Set the fridge to 37 degrees Fahrenheit and monitor with a separate thermometer for 24 hours.

It can take up to 24 hours for the temperature to fully stabilize after a repair. Do not adjust the thermostat repeatedly.

When to call a professional

If the door seal is good, coils are clean, the fan is running, and vents are clear but the fridge section is still warm, the damper control assembly or compressor may be failing. A technician can diagnose sealed-system issues.
