GE Refrigerator Error Code dS — Defrost Sensor Failure

Advanced Repair 45–90 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, Hair dryer, Flashlight, Towels

What this means

The dS error code on GE refrigerators indicates that the defrost circuit has not drawn any current for 48 hours. This is a more severe version of the dE code and means the defrost system has completely stopped functioning. The evaporator coils are likely heavily frosted over, blocking all airflow. The defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost control board has failed and needs immediate attention before food spoils.

Step-by-step fix

5 steps
1

Manually defrost the refrigerator

Unplug the refrigerator and remove all food. Leave the doors open for 24 hours to allow all ice to melt. Place towels inside and around the refrigerator to absorb water. This is necessary before you can access and test the defrost components.

Store perishable food in coolers with ice while defrosting. A full manual defrost is unavoidable at this point.

2

Remove the evaporator cover panel

Once the ice has melted, remove the screws or clips holding the back panel inside the freezer compartment. This exposes the evaporator coils, defrost heater, and defrost thermostat.

Some GE models have a styrofoam insulation panel behind the metal cover. Remove both layers carefully.

3

Test the defrost heater for continuity

Disconnect the defrost heater wires and test with a multimeter set to continuity. A working heater should show low resistance (15–30 ohms typically). An OL reading means the heater element is burned out.

Visually inspect the heater element for visible breaks or dark spots which indicate a burned-out section.

4

Test the defrost thermostat

Locate the defrost thermostat clipped to the evaporator tubing. Disconnect it and test for continuity. At room temperature, it should be closed (showing continuity). If it reads OL, it is stuck open and must be replaced.

You can cool the thermostat in a cup of ice water — it should show continuity when cold. If not, it has failed.

5

Test or replace the defrost control board

If both the heater and thermostat test good, the defrost control board (or timer on older models) is not sending power to the defrost circuit. Replace the defrost control board. On newer GE models, it is usually located behind the refrigerator near the compressor.

Write down the model number from the door tag before ordering parts — defrost boards vary between model series.

When to call a professional

The dS code indicates a complete defrost failure that has gone on for at least 48 hours. If you are not comfortable testing electrical components with a multimeter, call a technician to prevent further food loss and potential compressor damage from overworking.
