GE Dryer Error Code E13 — Gas Valve Coil Failure (Gas Models)

Moderate Repair 30–60 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, 1/4-inch nut driver, Multimeter, Pliers

What this means

The E13 error code on GE gas dryers indicates that the gas valve solenoid coils are not operating correctly. These coils open the gas valve to allow gas flow to the burner after the igniter reaches the proper temperature. When the coils fail, the igniter glows but gas never reaches the burner, so the dryer tumbles but does not heat. This is one of the most common GE gas dryer repairs.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Confirm the symptom

Run the dryer on a heat cycle and observe for several minutes. If the drum tumbles but the air is not getting hot, and you can hear the igniter clicking or glowing but then shutting off without the burner lighting, the gas valve coils are the likely cause.

You can sometimes see the igniter glow through the small openings at the bottom front of the dryer. If it glows orange and then shuts off without a flame igniting, the gas valve is not opening.

2

Access the gas valve assembly

Unplug the dryer and turn off the gas supply. Remove the front lower access panel or the full front panel depending on your model. The gas valve is located at the bottom of the dryer near the burner tube.

Always turn off the gas supply valve behind the dryer before working on any gas components.

3

Test the gas valve coils

There are typically two or three coils on the gas valve. Disconnect each coil's wire connector and test with a multimeter set to ohms. Each coil should read between 1,000 and 2,000 ohms. An OL reading means the coil is open and needs replacement.

Gas valve coils often fail intermittently — the dryer may heat at first but then stop mid-cycle. Replace all coils at once, even if only one tests bad.

4

Replace the gas valve coil kit

Remove the old coils from the gas valve by releasing the retaining clips and disconnecting the wires. Install the new coils, reconnect the wires, turn the gas supply back on, and test the dryer.

After replacement, run the dryer for a full cycle and check for the smell of gas. If you smell gas at any point, turn off the gas immediately and call a professional.

When to call a professional

If you are not comfortable working around gas lines, or if the coils test good but the dryer still does not heat, the gas valve itself or the igniter may need replacement. Gas appliance repairs carry safety risks and should be handled by a licensed technician if you have any uncertainty.
