GE Dryer Error Code E11 — Drum Motor Failure

Advanced Repair 45–90 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, 1/4-inch nut driver, Multimeter, Putty knife

What this means

The E11 error code on GE dryers indicates the drum motor is not turning, is drawing excessive current, or is not responding to the control board. This can be caused by a seized motor bearing, a broken drive belt, a jammed drum, or a failed motor winding. If the motor hums but the drum does not spin, the belt or motor bearing is the most likely culprit.

Step-by-step fix

5 steps
1

Listen for motor sounds

Start the dryer and listen carefully. A humming sound without drum rotation suggests the motor is trying to turn but is blocked. No sound at all may indicate a dead motor or a wiring issue. Squealing or grinding indicates a failing motor bearing.

If you hear a clicking sound from the motor start relay followed by silence, the motor winding may be burned out.

2

Check the drive belt

Unplug the dryer and open the cabinet. On most GE dryers, this means releasing the top panel with a putty knife and removing the front panel. Check whether the belt is intact and properly routed around the drum, motor pulley, and idler pulley.

A broken belt is one of the most common reasons the drum will not spin. You can check by trying to turn the drum by hand — if it spins freely with no resistance, the belt is likely broken.

3

Check for drum obstructions

With the cabinet open, try rotating the drum by hand. It should turn smoothly. If it feels stuck or makes grinding noises, check for clothing or foreign objects caught between the drum and the housing.

Small items can fall between the drum and the front or rear bulkhead, especially around the felt seal areas.

4

Test the motor windings

Disconnect the motor wire harness. Use a multimeter set to ohms to test across the motor terminals. You should read between 1 and 5 ohms for the run winding. An OL reading means the winding is burned out and the motor must be replaced.

Also check for continuity between each motor terminal and the motor housing to detect a ground fault.

5

Replace the motor or belt as needed

If the belt is broken, route the new belt around the drum, idler pulley, and motor pulley. If the motor is faulty, disconnect it from the mounting bracket, remove the blower wheel, and install the new motor. Reassemble and test.

When replacing the belt, thread it onto the motor pulley last — have a helper hold the idler pulley back while you loop the belt into position.

When to call a professional

Motor replacement requires removing the blower wheel, which can be difficult without a proper puller tool. If you are not comfortable with electrical testing or heavy disassembly, have a technician handle this repair.
