Frigidaire Washer Error Code EF1 — Clogged Drain Pump
What this means
Error code EF1 indicates the drain pump is physically obstructed. Unlike drain relay errors (E23/E24), this code means the pump is trying to run but cannot move water due to a blockage. Small items like coins, buttons, or lint buildup are the most common causes.
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsPrepare for water
Place towels and a shallow pan under the drain pump filter area at the bottom front of the washer. There will be residual water.
Have several towels ready — a full tub of water can release when you open the filter.
Clean the drain pump filter
Open the small access door at the bottom front of the washer. Slowly unscrew the drain pump filter and let water drain into the pan. Remove any debris from the filter and housing.
Common items found: coins, hairpins, small socks, and lint buildup.
Check the drain hose
Disconnect the drain hose from the standpipe or utility sink. Check for clogs by running water through it.
A kinked drain hose can also cause this error — ensure the hose has no sharp bends.
Test the pump impeller
With the filter removed, look inside the pump housing. Spin the impeller by hand — it should rotate freely.
If the impeller is cracked or broken, the pump needs replacement.
When to call a professional
If the filter and hose are clear but the pump impeller doesn't spin, the drain pump motor may have failed.
