E21

Electrolux Washer Error Code E21 — Drain Time Exceeded

Moderate 15–45 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Shallow pan or towels, Pliers, Flashlight

What this means

The E21 error code on Electrolux washers means the machine could not drain the water from the tub within the expected timeframe (typically 3–5 minutes). This is usually caused by a clogged drain filter, blocked drain hose, a kinked drain hose, a faulty drain pump, or an obstruction in the pump impeller. The washer will stop mid-cycle with water still inside the drum.

Alternate codes: E 21

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Clean the drain pump filter

Locate the drain pump filter access door on the lower front of the washer. Place towels and a shallow pan beneath it. Slowly open the filter cap and allow water to drain. Remove the filter and clean out any lint, coins, buttons, or debris.

This is the most common fix for E21 — check the filter first before moving on to other steps.

2

Check the drain hose

Pull the washer away from the wall and inspect the drain hose. Make sure it is not kinked, pinched, or pushed too far into the standpipe. The hose should extend 6–8 inches into the standpipe, no more.

If the drain hose is pushed too deep into the standpipe, it creates a siphon effect that prevents proper draining.

3

Inspect the drain pump impeller

With the filter removed, shine a flashlight into the pump housing. Check if the impeller can spin freely. Remove any foreign objects (hair ties, small clothing items, etc.) that may be jamming the impeller.

Reach in carefully — broken glass or sharp objects can sometimes get lodged in the pump.

4

Test the drain pump motor

If the filter and hose are clear, access the drain pump from behind or below the washer. Disconnect the wiring and test the pump motor for continuity with a multimeter. Replace the pump if it fails the test.

A humming sound without draining usually means the pump motor is seized or the impeller is broken.

When to call a professional

If the drain pump and all hoses are clear but the washer still won't drain, the control board may not be sending the drain signal, requiring professional diagnosis.
