OP

Electrolux Refrigerator Error Code OP — Sensor Open Circuit

Moderate 20–40 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Nut driver (1/4 inch), Multimeter

What this means

The OP error code on Electrolux refrigerators indicates one of the temperature sensors (thermistors) has an open circuit — it is no longer sending a signal to the control board. This is the companion to the SH (shorted) code. An open-circuit sensor reads as if the temperature is extremely cold (or gives no reading at all), which can cause the compressor to not run or to run erratically. Common causes include a failed sensor, a broken wire, or a disconnected connector.

Alternate codes: Op, OP error

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Identify the affected sensor

Check if the display indicates which sensor has failed (fresh food, freezer, or evaporator). If not specified, test each sensor. Access the sensors by removing interior panels or covers.

If only the fridge section is warming up while the freezer is fine, the fresh food sensor is likely the culprit.

2

Test each sensor

Disconnect each sensor and test with a multimeter. At room temperature, a typical thermistor reads 10,000–16,000 ohms. An OL (open/infinite) reading confirms the sensor has an open circuit.

Test the sensor at the connector pins first — this checks both the sensor and its lead wires.

3

Check the wiring

If a sensor tests OL at the connector but reads normally when tested directly at the sensor, the wire between them is broken. Inspect the wiring for breaks, especially where it passes through hinges or tight spaces.

On French door models, the wire harness through the top hinge is a common failure point.

4

Replace the sensor or repair wiring

Replace the open-circuit sensor or repair the broken wire. After replacement, power cycle the refrigerator and verify the error clears and temperatures stabilize.

Sensors are inexpensive ($10–$25). If in doubt about the wiring vs. sensor, replace the sensor first.

When to call a professional

If all sensors and wiring test fine, the control board input circuit may have failed. A technician can test the board.
