Whirlpool Washer Error Code rL — Items Detected During Clean Washer Cycle
What this means
The rL error code on Whirlpool washers (also displayed as F34 on some older models) appears when the washer detects laundry or other items inside the drum during a Clean Washer or Affresh cycle. This cycle is designed to run empty with a cleaning tablet to sanitize the tub. The washer senses the load through motor current draw and will not proceed until the drum is empty.
Alternate codes: rl, F34
Step-by-step fix
2 stepsRemove all items from the drum
Open the washer door and remove all clothing, towels, or other items from inside the drum. Check for small items like socks that may be hidden under the drum paddles or stuck to the door seal.
Also remove any items from the detergent dispenser drawer — the cycle should run completely empty except for the cleaning tablet.
Restart the Clean Washer cycle
Place an Affresh tablet or washer cleaning tablet in the drum (not in the dispenser). Close the door, select the Clean Washer cycle, and press Start.
Run this cycle monthly to prevent odor and residue buildup inside the washer.
When to call a professional
This is not a repair situation. If the code appears even with an empty drum, the motor current sensor may be faulty — contact a technician.
