F9 E2

Whirlpool Washer Error Code F9 E2 — Drain Pump Circuit Failure

Moderate-Advanced Repair 45–90 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, Pliers, Towels

What this means

The F9 E2 error code on Whirlpool front-load washers indicates a drain pump circuit failure. Unlike F9 E1 which signals a clogged drain, F9 E2 specifically points to an electrical problem — the control board cannot communicate with or detect the drain pump motor. This is typically caused by a failed drain pump motor, a broken wire in the pump harness, or a relay failure on the main control board.

Alternate codes: F9E2

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Manually drain the washer

The tub may be full of water. Locate the drain filter access at the front bottom of the washer. Place towels and a shallow pan below it. Slowly open the drain filter cap to release the water.

Open the cap very slowly — water will rush out. Have multiple towels ready.

2

Check the drain pump wiring

Unplug the washer. Access the drain pump from the front lower panel or by tilting the washer. Inspect the wire connector at the pump motor for burns, corrosion, or loose connections.

Wiggle the connector gently — if the pump briefly activates during diagnostics, a loose connection is the cause.

3

Test the drain pump motor

Disconnect the pump motor wires. Using a multimeter, test for continuity across the pump motor terminals. A good pump should show 5–15 ohms of resistance. An open reading means the motor has failed.

Also check for voltage at the pump connector when the washer is in drain mode (requires careful live testing or professional help).

4

Replace the drain pump

Remove the mounting screws holding the pump to the tub. Disconnect the hoses (have towels ready for residual water). Install the new pump, reconnect hoses and wiring, and run a drain test.

Use spring clamps or hose clamps properly to prevent leaks after reassembly.

When to call a professional

If the drain pump tests good and wiring is intact, the main control board relay for the pump may have failed. This requires board-level diagnosis by a technician.
