Whirlpool Washer Error Code F7 E6 — Motor Rotor Position Sensor Fault

Advanced Repair 60–120 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Socket set, Multimeter, Spanner wrench

What this means

The F7 E6 error code on Whirlpool washers indicates a motor rotor position sensor (RPS) fault. The motor control unit cannot determine the rotor's position, preventing the motor from starting or maintaining proper speed. This is commonly caused by a failed RPS sensor, damaged wiring between the sensor and the MCU, or a faulty stator assembly. It typically appears when the washer tries to spin or agitate.

Alternate codes: F7E6

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Unplug and access the motor

Disconnect the washer from power. For front-load models, remove the rear access panel by unscrewing the perimeter screws. Locate the drive motor and stator assembly at the bottom rear of the tub.

Place the washer on a stable surface and have someone help steady it when removing the rear panel.

2

Inspect the RPS sensor

The RPS sensor is a small component mounted on the stator that detects the rotor's magnetic position. Check that its connector is firmly plugged in and that the wiring is not damaged or pinched.

The RPS sensor has a small three-wire connector — look for corrosion or bent pins in the connector.

3

Test the stator and RPS with a multimeter

Disconnect the stator wire harness from the MCU board. Test the resistance between each pair of the three stator winding wires — they should all read between 4-6 ohms. Test the RPS sensor wires according to your tech sheet.

Unequal readings across the stator windings indicate a failing stator assembly that needs full replacement.

4

Replace the stator assembly or RPS sensor

If the RPS sensor or stator is faulty, remove the rotor bolt using a spanner wrench, pull off the rotor, then remove the stator mounting bolts. Install the new assembly in reverse order.

When reinstalling the rotor bolt, use a torque wrench to tighten it to the manufacturer's specification — over-tightening can damage the shaft.

When to call a professional

Motor and stator replacement requires significant disassembly. If you are not experienced with appliance motor repairs, this is best handled by a professional technician.
