SY EF

Whirlpool Refrigerator Error Code SY EF — Evaporator Fan Motor Fault

Moderate-Advanced Repair 30–60 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, 1/4-inch nut driver, Multimeter

What this means

The SY EF error code on Whirlpool refrigerators indicates the evaporator fan motor has a fault. The evaporator fan circulates cold air from the evaporator coils throughout the freezer and fresh food compartments. When this fan fails, the freezer may still get cold near the coils, but the fresh food section and parts of the freezer won't cool properly. You may notice frost buildup on the back wall of the freezer and warm temperatures in the refrigerator.

Alternate codes: SYEF

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Listen for the fan

Open the freezer door and press the door switch (the button the door pushes when closed). Listen for the evaporator fan running inside the freezer behind the rear panel. If you hear nothing, the fan has likely failed.

On some models, the fan stops when the door is open — pressing the door switch simulates a closed door.

2

Check for ice obstruction

Remove the rear panel inside the freezer (usually held by screws). Check if ice has built up around the fan blades, preventing rotation. If so, defrost the area manually with a hair dryer.

Ice buildup blocking the fan often points to a separate defrost system problem that should also be addressed.

3

Test the fan motor

Unplug the refrigerator. Disconnect the fan motor wires and test for continuity with a multimeter. Try spinning the fan blades by hand — they should rotate freely.

If the motor hums but doesn't spin, the bearings have seized and the motor needs replacement.

4

Replace the evaporator fan motor

Remove the mounting clips or screws holding the fan assembly. Disconnect the wires and remove the old motor. Install the new motor, making sure the fan blade is oriented correctly for proper airflow direction.

Note the fan blade direction before removal — installing it backwards will push air the wrong way.

When to call a professional

If the fan motor and wiring are good but the error persists, the main control board's fan relay may have failed.
