Whirlpool Refrigerator Error Code E9 — Ice Maker Sensor Error

Moderate DIY Repair 25–45 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, Flathead screwdriver

What this means

The E9 error code on Whirlpool refrigerators indicates a problem with the ice maker sensor system. This can be the ice maker thermostat (mold heater thermostat), the ice level infrared sensor, or the wiring connecting these components. The ice maker may stop producing ice or may overproduce and jam. This code is common on Whirlpool French Door and side-by-side models with built-in ice makers.

Step-by-step fix

3 steps
1

Reset the ice maker

Locate the ice maker inside the freezer. Find the reset button (usually a small button on the bottom or side of the ice maker unit). Press and hold it for 5–10 seconds until you hear a chime or the motor engages.

Some models have a slide switch instead of a button — slide it off and back on.

2

Check the ice level sensor

The infrared ice level sensor is located on the side wall of the ice bin area. Clean the emitter and receiver lenses with a soft cloth. Ensure there is no ice buildup blocking the sensor beam path.

Frost or ice buildup on the sensor is a common cause. Defrost the area with a hair dryer on low heat if needed.

3

Test and replace the ice maker thermostat

Unplug the refrigerator. Remove the ice maker assembly. Test the mold thermostat with a multimeter for continuity. If it reads open at room temperature, replace the thermostat or the entire ice maker assembly.

Replacement ice maker assemblies often include the thermostat, making a full assembly swap easier.

When to call a professional

If the ice maker assembly and sensor test correctly but the error persists, the main control board's ice maker circuit may be faulty.
