Whirlpool Dishwasher Error Code F6 E3 — Communication Failure

Advanced Repair 45–90 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Torx screwdriver (T20), Multimeter

What this means

The F6 E3 error code on Whirlpool dishwashers indicates a communication failure between the main electronic control board and the user interface control board. This means the board that controls the wash cycle and the board that processes your button presses are not talking to each other. Common causes include a loose ribbon cable, a failed control board, or water damage to the electronics from a leak or steam intrusion.

Alternate codes: F6E3

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Reset the dishwasher

Turn off the circuit breaker for the dishwasher for at least 5 minutes. Turn it back on and see if the dishwasher powers up normally. Communication errors can sometimes be caused by brief power fluctuations.

If the dishwasher resets successfully but the error returns during a cycle, the connection is intermittent and needs physical inspection.

2

Access the control boards

Open the dishwasher door. Remove the screws along the inside edge of the door panel (usually Torx T20). Carefully separate the outer door panel from the inner door to access the control boards housed inside the door.

Support the outer door panel as you remove the last screws — it is heavy and can fall if not supported.

3

Check the ribbon cable and connectors

Locate the ribbon cable connecting the user interface board (behind the buttons) to the main control board. Unplug it, inspect for corrosion or damaged pins, and reconnect it firmly. Also check all other wire harness connections on both boards.

Steam from wash cycles can work its way into the door panel and cause corrosion on connectors over time.

4

Replace the faulty control board

If connections are secure and undamaged, one of the control boards has likely failed. Replace the main control board first, as it is the more common failure point. If the error persists, replace the user interface board as well.

When reassembling the door, ensure the gasket between the inner and outer door panels is properly seated to prevent future steam intrusion.

When to call a professional

Dishwasher door panel disassembly and control board replacement can be tricky. If you are not comfortable with this level of repair, a technician can efficiently diagnose and replace the correct board.
