F2 E3

Whirlpool Dishwasher Error Code F2 E3 — Water Temperature Not Rising

Moderate DIY Repair 25–45 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, Torx T15 screwdriver

What this means

The F2 E3 error code on Whirlpool dishwashers indicates the water temperature is not rising at the expected rate during the wash cycle. The control board monitors the temperature sensor and expects a minimum temperature increase over a set time. Causes include a faulty heating element, a failed temperature sensor (thermistor), low incoming water temperature, or a control board issue.

Alternate codes: F2E3

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Check the hot water supply

Run the hot water faucet nearest the dishwasher until the water is hot before starting a cycle. The incoming water should be at least 120°F (49°C) for proper operation.

If your hot water heater is set too low or is far from the dishwasher, the incoming water may not be hot enough.

2

Test the heating element

Turn off the circuit breaker. Access the heating element connections under the dishwasher tub (usually at the bottom). Disconnect the wires and measure resistance — the element should read 10–20 ohms. Also check for continuity to ground (should be none).

Visually inspect the element inside the tub — look for cracks, breaks, or white calcium deposits that indicate a crack.

3

Test the temperature sensor (thermistor)

Locate the thermistor — usually near the bottom of the dishwasher tub or integrated into the sump area. Disconnect and test with a multimeter. At room temperature it should read approximately 50,000 ohms (50K), decreasing as temperature rises.

If the thermistor reads correctly at room temp but the error still occurs, place it in warm water and verify the resistance drops proportionally.

4

Replace the failed component

Replace whichever component tested outside its normal range — the heating element or the thermistor. Reconnect all wiring and run a test cycle to verify the error clears.

If both the element and thermistor test good, the control board's heater relay may be faulty.

When to call a professional

If both the heating element and thermistor test correctly, the control board's heater relay circuit may be damaged. A technician can verify with live voltage testing.
