Thermador Refrigerator Error Code E04 — Evaporator Fan Motor Fault

Moderate Repair 25–50 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, 1/4-inch nut driver, Multimeter, Hair dryer (if ice buildup)

What this means

Error E04 on Thermador refrigerators indicates the evaporator fan motor has failed or is not operating at the correct speed. The evaporator fan circulates cold air from the evaporator coils throughout the refrigerator and freezer compartments. Without it, the compressor may run but temperatures will rise because cold air is not being distributed. Causes include a seized fan motor, ice buildup around the fan blades (from a defrost system failure), a failed fan motor winding, or a disconnected wire harness.

Alternate codes: Er 04, Err 04

Step-by-step fix

3 steps
1

Check for ice buildup around the fan

Open the freezer and remove shelves, drawers, and the back panel or evaporator cover. The fan is located behind this cover. Check for ice encasing the fan blades. If ice is present, it is preventing the fan from spinning. This indicates a defrost system problem — defrost the ice manually with a hair dryer on low heat before investigating the defrost system.

Ice buildup around the fan is usually caused by a failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer. Clearing the ice is a temporary fix — the defrost system must also be repaired.

2

Test the fan motor

With the evaporator cover removed and ice cleared, try spinning the fan blade by hand. It should turn freely. If it is stiff, the motor bearings have seized. Disconnect the fan motor wire harness and test with a multimeter for continuity across the motor windings. No continuity means the motor has failed.

Thermador evaporator fan motors are DC brushless motors on newer models — they may have multiple wires (3 or more). Test between the power leads as indicated in your model's wiring diagram.

3

Replace the evaporator fan motor

Remove the mounting screws or clips securing the fan motor to the housing. Disconnect the wire connector. Install the new motor, ensuring the fan blade is properly attached and has clearance. Reconnect, reinstall the evaporator cover and shelves, and restore power.

Make sure the fan blade is oriented correctly — if reversed, it will push air in the wrong direction and the compartment will not cool.

When to call a professional

If the fan motor is fine but the evaporator is frozen solid, the defrost system needs repair (defrost heater, thermostat, or control board defrost relay). This involves electrical testing that is best handled by a professional.
