E02

Thermador Refrigerator Error Code E02 — Freezer Compartment Sensor Fault

Moderate Repair 20–40 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, 1/4-inch nut driver

What this means

Error E02 on Thermador refrigerators indicates the freezer compartment temperature sensor (NTC thermistor) is sending an out-of-range signal to the main control board. Without accurate freezer temperature data, the compressor and defrost system cannot operate correctly. The freezer may overcool, undercool, or fail to defrost. Causes are the same as E01 — a failed thermistor, a loose connector, or a damaged wire — but the affected sensor is in the freezer rather than the fresh food compartment.

Alternate codes: Er 02, Err 02

Step-by-step fix

3 steps
1

Power reset the refrigerator

Turn off the breaker or unplug the unit for 5 minutes. Restore power and check if the E02 code clears after the system reinitializes.

If the freezer is significantly overcooling or not cooling at all, check the actual freezer temperature with a standalone thermometer after the reset.

2

Locate and test the freezer thermistor

The freezer sensor is usually located near the freezer evaporator or clipped to the evaporator cover inside the freezer compartment. Remove any shelves or panels needed to access it. Disconnect the wire harness and measure resistance. At 0°F (-18°C — normal freezer temperature), expect about 30,000–35,000 ohms. At room temperature, about 10,000–12,000 ohms.

If you test the sensor at room temperature after removing it from the freezer, it should read similarly to the fresh food sensor — around 10K–12K ohms. The readings differ only when at their operating temperatures.

3

Replace the freezer thermistor

Unclip the sensor, disconnect the connector, and install the replacement. Route the wire exactly as the original to avoid pinching. Reinstall any panels or covers and restore power.

Allow 24 hours after replacement for the freezer to fully stabilize and the control board to confirm the error is resolved.

When to call a professional

If the thermistor and wiring are both good but E02 persists, the main control board's sensor input circuit may be faulty — this requires professional board-level diagnosis.
