E003

Thermador Oven Error Code E003 — Oven Over-Temperature Protection Activated

Advanced Repair 30–60 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, 1/4-inch nut driver

What this means

Error E003 on Thermador ovens indicates the oven cavity temperature exceeded the safety threshold. The control board monitors temperature continuously and has a maximum limit (typically around 650°F in bake mode). When exceeded, it cuts power to all heating elements and displays E003. This is a critical safety feature. Causes include a failed temperature sensor (causing the oven to overheat because it thinks it is colder than it is), a stuck relay that keeps an element energized, a faulty convection fan (causing uneven heating), or a shorted heating element.

Alternate codes: E03, E0-03

Step-by-step fix

3 steps
1

Let the oven cool completely and reset

Turn off the oven at the circuit breaker. Do not open the door — let the oven cool naturally for at least 45 minutes. Restore power and check if E003 clears. If it was a one-time event (e.g., during a long self-clean cycle), the code may not return.

Thermador ovens have excellent insulation. Even after turning off the breaker, the interior can stay above 400°F for over an hour.

2

Test the temperature sensor

A drifting or inaccurate sensor can cause the oven to overheat because the control board does not get correct temperature feedback. Test the RTD probe as described for E011/E012 — it should read about 1100 ohms at room temperature. An incorrect reading means the sensor needs replacement.

Even a sensor that reads in the correct range but has developed a slow response time can cause overshoot. If E003 keeps occurring, replace the sensor even if it tests marginally acceptable.

3

Check for a stuck relay on the control board

If the oven seems to heat even when it should be off (you can feel heat radiating after a long idle period), a relay on the control board may be welded shut. With the oven unplugged, test continuity across the bake and broil element terminals on the control board. No continuity should be present when the oven is off.

A stuck relay is a fire hazard. If confirmed, do not reconnect the oven to power until the control board is replaced.

When to call a professional

Thermador ovens with stuck relays or recurring over-temperature conditions should be serviced immediately by an authorized technician. This is a safety-critical issue.
