Thermador Oven Error Code E002 — Oven Not Reaching Set Temperature

Moderate Repair 20–50 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, 1/4-inch nut driver

What this means

Error E002 on Thermador ovens indicates the oven cavity did not reach the target temperature within the time limit set by the control board. This code appears when the oven is significantly under-heating. Causes include a failed heating element (bake or broil), a tripped thermal fuse, a faulty temperature sensor reading too high (causing the control to think the oven is hotter than it is), a broken igniter on gas models, or a failed convection fan motor that is not distributing heat properly.

Alternate codes: E02, E0-02

Step-by-step fix

3 steps
1

Test the bake and broil heating elements (electric) or igniter (gas)

Turn off the oven breaker. For electric ovens: access the bake element at the bottom and broil element at the top. Disconnect each element and test with a multimeter for continuity — a good element reads 20–50 ohms. For gas ovens: the igniter is at the bottom of the oven near the burner tube. Test for continuity (good igniters read 40–400 ohms depending on model). A visually cracked or dim-glowing igniter should be replaced even if it has continuity.

On Thermador Pro Harmony and Pro Grand ranges, the bake element or burner is concealed beneath the oven floor for a cleaner look. You may need to remove the oven floor panel to access it.

2

Check the convection fan motor

For Thermador convection ovens, the convection fan is critical for even heating. Open the oven door and try to spin the fan by hand (with power off). It should spin freely. If it is stiff or stuck, the motor bearings may have failed. Also check the fan blade for cracks or damage.

A convection fan that runs slowly but does not stop will cause uneven heating and longer preheat times — listen for any grinding or scraping noises.

3

Test the temperature sensor

A sensor that reads too high will cause the control board to cut heating prematurely, resulting in an under-temperature condition. Test the RTD sensor at room temperature — it should read about 1100 ohms. A higher-than-expected reading means the sensor is drifting and should be replaced.

A sensor reading 1200–1300 ohms at room temperature will cause the oven to run about 30–50°F below the set temperature.

When to call a professional

If all heating components and the sensor test good, the control board relay may not be providing full power to the element. This requires board-level diagnosis by a Thermador technician.
