Thermador Dishwasher Error Code E24 — Drain Blocked / Cannot Drain
What this means
Error E24 on Thermador dishwashers indicates the unit cannot drain water from the tub. The drain pump is running but water is not evacuating within the expected timeframe. This is identical to the Bosch E24 code since both share the BSH platform. Common causes include a clogged drain filter, a blocked drain hose, a plugged garbage disposal connection (forgotten knockout plug on new installations), a kinked drain hose, or a failed drain pump. The dishwasher will stop the cycle with water remaining in the tub.
Alternate codes: E:24
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsClean the drain filter assembly
Open the dishwasher door (some water may be in the tub). Remove the lower dish rack. Twist the cylindrical drain filter counterclockwise and lift it out. Remove the coarse filter screen beneath it. Clean both pieces under running water, removing all food debris, grease, and foreign objects. Also clean the sump area beneath the filter.
Thermador recommends cleaning the drain filter after every 5–10 cycles for optimal drainage. Premium dishwashers handle fine food particles but not large debris.
Check the drain hose and connections
Pull the dishwasher forward to access the drain hose. Follow the hose from the back of the dishwasher to where it connects to the sink drain or garbage disposal. Check for kinks, compressions, or blockages. If connected to a garbage disposal, make sure the knockout plug was removed and the connection is clear.
The drain hose must have a high loop — at least 20 inches above the floor — to prevent backflow. Many E24 errors are caused by a hose that has slipped down.
Inspect the drain pump impeller
With the filters removed, look into the sump area. On Thermador dishwashers, you may see the drain pump cover. Carefully check if anything is obstructing the impeller (glass shards, bones, fruit pits, toothpicks). Clear any obstructions.
A common culprit is a small piece of broken glass or a fruit pit wedged against the impeller — use a flashlight for a thorough check.
Test the drain pump motor
If the drain hose and filter are clear but water still will not drain, the drain pump motor may have failed. Start a cycle and listen — you should hear the pump engage during the drain phase. Complete silence means the pump motor has burned out or lost its electrical connection.
On some Thermador models, you can manually trigger a drain by pressing and holding the Start button for 3 seconds.
When to call a professional
If the drain pump motor has failed or the impeller is cracked, professional replacement is recommended. Accessing the drain pump on Thermador dishwashers requires removing the unit from the cabinet.
