Speed Queen Washer Error Code nF — No Fill (Water Not Detected)

Moderate Repair 15–40 minutes Tools: Adjustable pliers, Small brush or toothpick, Multimeter, Bucket

What this means

Error code nF on Speed Queen washers indicates the machine has been waiting for water for five minutes without detecting any change in water level. The pressure switch or water level sensor has not registered incoming water. Common causes include closed water supply valves, kinked inlet hoses, clogged inlet valve screens, a failed water inlet valve solenoid, or a faulty pressure switch. In cold climates, frozen supply lines can also trigger this code. This is one of the most frequently reported Speed Queen error codes.

Alternate codes: Er nF, Er:nF, NF, E:nF

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Verify water supply valves are open

Check the hot and cold water supply valves behind the washer. Both should be fully open (turned counterclockwise). Turn them off and back on to confirm they are not seized.

If the valves are the quarter-turn ball type, the handle should be parallel to the supply line when open.

2

Inspect inlet hoses for kinks or blockage

Turn off the water supply and disconnect both inlet hoses from the back of the washer. Check for kinks, crimps, or sediment blockage. Hold each hose over a bucket and briefly turn the valve on to confirm water flows freely.

Replace rubber inlet hoses every 5 years — old hoses can develop internal blockages from rubber deterioration.

3

Clean the inlet valve filter screens

With the hoses removed, look at the inlet valve ports on the back of the washer. Each port has a small mesh filter screen. Carefully pull the screens out with needle-nose pliers and rinse them under running water. Remove any sediment or mineral buildup.

If you have hard water, these screens can clog frequently. Consider installing a sediment pre-filter on the supply line.

4

Test the water inlet valve

If water supply is confirmed good and screens are clean, the inlet valve solenoid may have failed. Unplug the washer, access the valve at the back of the machine, disconnect the wire harness, and test the solenoid coils with a multimeter. Each coil should read between 500–1500 ohms.

Speed Queen inlet valves are typically dual-solenoid (hot and cold). Test both coils independently.

When to call a professional

If the inlet valve tests good and the pressure switch hose is clear, the pressure switch or control board may be at fault. These require diagnostic testing by a certified technician.
